2009 Is the Year of the Ram

Dodge Ram is the future of power and performance.

Chinese astrology indicates the Year of the Ram isn’t until 2015. However, the 2009 Dodge Ram begs to differ. The new Ram edges out the competition with unmatched ride quality, power and loads of space. For 2009, the Ram gains increased power, a rear suspension setup featuring coil springs and a first-class interior with new storage systems.

The 2009 Dodge Ram is a muscular, full-size pickup that’s best suited to those who want full-size truck functionality without any shortcomings in comfort and convenience. Consumer Guide says, “The new Ram makes news for impressive comfort, creative storage options and abundant power.” This accomplished ride won Motor Trend’s “Best Pickup Driver’s Choice” award and was an “Editor’s Choice” for Car and Driver.

The Ram comes in base ST, SLT, TRX, sporty R/T and Laramie trims. It’s available in Regular Cab, Quad Cab, Crew Cab and Mega Cab configurations with a short or long bed, in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The base ST is available in Regular and Quad Cab styles while the SLT comes in all cab styles. The Sport Package R/T is available with all cab styles while the TRX and Laramie trims come in Quad Cab and Crew Cab configurations. The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups are available in three cab styles – Regular, Quad Cab and Mega Cab. The Regular Cabs come with a long bed only. The Regular Cab is available in ST or SLT trims, the Quad Cab is available in ST, SLT and Laramie trims and the Mega Cab is SLT or Laramie only.

The Ram’s high-powered 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine is perfect for the power hungry, producing an impressive 390 hp and 407 lb/ft of torque. It has better fuel efficiency than last year’s model, earning it an almost 10 percent increase in gas mileage despite the increase in power. Other options include the base 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces 215 hp and 235 lb/ft of torque and the 4.7-liter V8 that churns 310 hp and 330 lb/ft of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard.

While the Ram comes with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, there are two 4×4 systems to choose from – a full-time version that has 4×4 automatic mode and shifts as needed or a part-time version with no automatic mode. This year, the Ram’s suspension has switched to a coil-over setup, creating a more stable and comfortable ride. The Ram certainly has road manners. The fastest Ram, the sporty R/T Regular Cab with a short bed, zooms from zero-to-60 in an amazing 5.7 seconds. Average fuel economy for the Ram is EPA-estimated at 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. Towing capacity depends on the model. The minimum is 9,100 pounds, going up to an astounding 15,100 pounds for a properly equipped Dodge Ram 3500.

The exterior of the Ram is aggressive looking and sleek. This year’s Ram reflects extensive aerodynamic work, resulting in what Dodge reports is “best in class” aerodynamics, yet it still maintains the toughness seen in past years. The 2009 also offers a more refined, more comfortable interior. Inside the cabin, the seating is comfortable and in fact, surprising for a full-size truck. There’s ample legroom in the front seat and especially the backseat where passengers will have enough room to stretch their legs and move around. Getting comfortable is easy for Ram drivers, thanks to an adjustable driver’s seat, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel and adjustable pedals. “The interior is well planned and executed,” says the Detroit News. “Gone are the white-faced gauges, replaced with a five-gauge instrument cluster that’s simple, neat and easy to read.”

One of the most exciting new features is a convenient cargo bed system called the RamBox, which transforms the interior of the bed walls into roomy lockable cubbies. It’s innovative and handy, especially for golf clubs and luggage or even for chilling drinks. The RamBox Package includes a sliding bed divider that doubles as a bed extender. The Ram is also clever when it comes to use of interior space, using every nook and cranny for storage of some kind. There are upper and lower gloveboxes, underfloor bins, under-seat cubbies and extra cupholders.

The ST basic work truck features a simple four-gauge instrument cluster, steel wheels and black and gray bumpers. Upgrading to the SLT adds upgraded wheels, chrome bumpers, quad headlamps and signal mirrors. Inside, you’ll find a five-gauge instrument cluster with trip computer, a covered upper glovebox and optional console with floor shifter. The TRX sports an integrated two-tone style with flared fenders, body-colored grille, unique wheels and matching bumpers. The sporty R/T has a dual exhaust, unique 20-inch wheels, an upgraded interior with bucket seating and a refined dash. The Laramie adds integrated wheel flares, top dashboard padding and chrome with wood appliqués on the front and rear doors. Major options on upper trims include a sunroof, upgraded stereo, Bluetooth, navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system.

So what’s next for the Ram? For 2010, a hybrid-electric version will make its debut. It’s nearly identical to the HEMI hybrid setup used on the Durango and Aspen hybrids.

The 2009 Dodge Ram starts at an MSRP of $22,170. The bottom line is that the 2009 Dodge Ram lineup offers pure power with optimum comfort and is the perfect choice for truck lovers.
